The new security checks Sweden's government ordered in January will cut the number of new citizenships awarded in 2025 by almost half, according to a new forecast by the Migration Agency.
Just over 2,000 letters have so far been sent out to Swedish citizenship applicants, inviting them to book a mandatory in-person identity check at the Migration Agency.
Sweden’s new security checks are likely to slow down the processing of citizenship applications even further than previously estimated, a new forecast suggests.
New statistics reveal that the Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is again approving Swedish citizenship applications, although still not at the same pace as before new security checks came into force.
The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) has begun contacting citizenship applicants to book in-person identity checks, effectively ending a near two-month freeze on approvals for standard naturalisation cases.
Sweden's processing rate of new citizenships has more than halved after new security checks were introduced, with the Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) unable to approve applications in standard cases for over a month.
