Press release - Refugees: MEPs to assess progress on transfers among EU countries - Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs



Progress in transferring asylum seekers from Greece and Italy to other EU countries under an intra-EU deal and from third countries to EU territory will be assessed by Civil Liberties Committee MEPs on Thursday. They will also discuss the results of the March 2016 deal with Turkey to improve the management of migration and refugee flows.

Press release - Refugees: MEPs deplore member states’ failure to act and call for solidarity

Plenary sessions : The failure so far of EU home affairs ministers to agree on how to relocate 120,000 asylum seekers was severely criticised by a large majority of MEPs during the plenary debate on the outcome of Monday's Council meeting. They called on member states to stand together, take urgent action to tackle the current crisis, and build a European asylum and migration system that will work in the long term.

Industry MEPs approved Copernicus, the EU’s new Earth Observation System, on Thursday, thus endorsing an informal deal reached with the Council of Ministers in late December. Replacing the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme, Copernicus will have a €3.79 billion budget for 2014-2020.

Growing unemployment - especially among the young, leading to their emigration – the loss of small firms and rising poverty rates, even among the middle class, are the key impacts of the economic crisis and adjustment measures designed by the ECB/EU Commission/IMF “Troika” for Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Ireland, say Employment Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. It calls for a jobs and social recovery plan for these countries.

Press release - Environment MEPs clamp down on wasteful plastic carrier bags - Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

EU states would have to reduce the consumption of most common and polluting plastic bags by 80% by 2019, under draft rules backed by the Environment Committee on Monday. To this end, MEPs recommend using economic instruments such as taxes and levies, marketing restrictions or bans. Plastic carrier bag litter is a major environmental concern, known to affect water bodies and aquatic eco-systems in particular.

Press release - Transport MEPs push for safer, more environmentally-friendly trucks - Committee on Transport and Tourism

Draft truck design rule changes, to allow designers to make it easier for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists and improve bodywork streamlining to cut pollutant emissions, were backed by Transport Committee MEPs on Tuesday. The rules would allow designs to exceed current maximum length and weight limits in order to improve performance in these areas.

Press release - Gaza: MEPs call for immediate ceasefire and resumption of direct peace talks

Plenary sessions : The European Parliament called for an immediate end to rocket attacks on Israel and to Israeli military action against Gaza in a resolution voted on Thursday The EU foreign policy chief and the member states must do more to support a ceasefire agreement and put an immediate stop to all acts of violence threatening civilians, MEPs said, calling on Israelis and Palestinians to resume direct peace talks.

Press release - Health MEPs propose blueprint for safer healthcare - Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

Suggested measures to improve patient safety, inter alia by tackling growing resistance to human and veterinary antibiotics by using existing treatments more responsibly and promoting innovation, are set out in a Health Committee resolution voted on Tuesday. MEPs note that between 8 and 12% of patients admitted to hospitals in the EU suffer adverse events such as healthcare-related infections, which place a heavy burden on limited health service budgets.

Press release - Development MEPs urge EU countries to stick to foreign aid commitments - Committee on Development

Development MEPs urged EU member countries to respect their Official Development Assistance (ODA) target of 0.7% of national income and to set timetables for reaching it by 2020. It also highlighted the need to mobilise domestic resources efficiently in developing countries and stressed the importance of private-sector contributions in a resolution on financing development adopted on Monday.
