Press release - MEPs call for free, gender-equal public education for all children

Plenary sessions : Gender equality measures must apply at all levels of the education system, including the curriculum and teacher training, so as to end gender stereotyping and help close the gap between women’s education and their professional development, say MEPs in a non-legislative resolution voted on Wednesday. Press release - MEPs call for country of origin labelling of meat in processed foods

Plenary sessions : Meat used as an ingredient in processed foods, such as lasagne, should be labelled by country of origin as is already the case with bovine fresh meat, said MEPs on Wednesday. They call on the European Commission, which published a report on the issue in late 2013, to come up with legislative proposals in order to rebuild consumer confidence in the wake of the horsemeat scandal and other food fraud cases.

Press release - MEPs call for ivory trade ban, penalties against wildlife trafficking

Plenary sessions : MEPs advocate a full and immediate EU-wide ban on ivory and rhinoceros horn trade, and call for common sanctions at EU level against wildlife trafficking, in a resolution voted on Thursday. Wildlife trafficking is worth an estimated €20 billion annually. It has grown in recent years, becoming one of the biggest and most profitable forms of organised cross-border crime.

Press release - MEPs call for EU aid to road hauliers in a debate on Russian import ban

Plenary sessions : Many MEPs called for solidarity among EU member states and concrete steps by the European Commission to aid road hauliers hit by Russian restrictions on food and farm produce imports from the EU, in a debate on Monday evening. The import ban’s impact on hauliers has been neglected, even though the EU has taken measures to support producers of fruit, vegetables and dairy produce, said Transport Committee MEPs in a question tabled for debate with the Commission.

Plenary sessions : MEPs condemned Turkey’s “maritime survey” activities as encroaching upon the Republic of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and its sovereign right to explore the natural resources within it, in a resolution voted on Thursday. The text also calls on Turkey to stop its “provocative actions” and “threats” against the Republic of Cyprus.

Press release - MEPs call on the EU to step up cooperation with Africa after the Valletta summit

Plenary sessions : The EU must take concrete steps to tackle the migration crisis and terrorism, such as building a partnership to this end with Africa, said MEPs in Wednesday’s debate with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Nicolas Schmit, representing the Council Presidency. The debate focused on the outcomes of the EU-Africa summit in Valletta (Malta) on 11-12 November and the G20 one in Antalya (Turkey) on 15-16 November.

Press release - MEPs call for a strong Paris deal on carbon markets, aviation and shipping - Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety

The Paris climate change agreement should not leave out aviation and shipping, two sectors whose emissions are rocketing and, if left unregulated, could account for up to 40% of all global emissions by 2050, (according to a European Parliament study), said the EP delegation on Tuesday. MEPs also advocate earmarking carbon market revenues as a possible solution for financing climate efforts.

Ways to unleash the full potential of the single market to the benefit of consumers, employees and businesses, in particular start-ups, are proposed in a report voted by Internal Market Committee MEPs on Thursday. Priorities include eliminating unjustified barriers to trade, helping SMEs and start-ups to scale up their activities, reforming VAT rules, developing legislative tools to foster the sharing economy and building a strong culture of compliance and enforcement.
